Social media has become one of the most universal topics in recent years. There are multiple platforms that people use daily including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn and more. Being that all of the above listed platforms are world-wide, it is important as a candidate to think about what you are posting before it goes live. Follow these tips below when posting on social media:
Is this something you want an employer or colleagues to see?
In this day and age, a simple Google search can bring up past history on people through social media. Be cautious on what you are posting to be sure it is not offensive, inappropriate or does not pose any type of miscommunication. It is important to navigate through social media with a mindset of “who is going to see this” and “how can this post affect me in the future”.
Be respectful
No matter where you are in life, always be respectful. Never post inappropriate or derogatory remarks online. Be sure to be inclusive and friendly in all postings and show compassion. You do not want to come off as having a negative attitude based on a social media posting.
Keep it relevant
Keep the information you are posting relevant to the platform. LinkedIn is a professional network, so it is important to be sure you are posting about career information. Facebook is more life and family centered, where if you choose to, you can share personal updates. Be cautious on what you are sharing and remember just because you have a privacy setting on does not mean it cannot be viewed.
Timing your posts
Posting regularly is always suggested on social media, to show engagement. Commenting on posts or jumping in on conversations is also important to show a diverse background and adaptability- especially if it is job or career related. Sharing your opinion is one thing, but always be sure you are cautious of wording and what you say. You wouldn’t want it to circle back and become a negative impact.
Check for spelling and grammar
Always be sure to check spelling and grammar on social media before hitting the post button. It is important to double check for errors to show attention to detail as well as credibility. When writing on behalf of someone else or in a professional setting, having another set of eyes on the content before it is live is always a good opportunity to check for errors and to have another opinion.
Don’t dominate in conversations
It is healthy to have conversations and the same goes for social media. Conversations are important to show your enthusiasm and commitment via social media- but don’t go overboard. Let others speak as well. You don’t want to be a topic hog and not let others collaborate. You never know how collaboration will work in your favor!
